Reminder: register all candidates before transplant, including those receiving living donor organs

Policy change in place as of September 1, 2014.

A recent change to OPTN policy, effective September 1, 2014, requires hospitals to register all living donor candidates before transplant. While most hospitals are successfully meeting this new requirement, some centers have not added their living donor organ recipient to the Waitlist prior to transplant.
This new requirement benefits patients in many ways. Living donor candidates have a unique identification number, which makes it easier to compare donor and candidate information, improves blood type verification before transplant, and allows candidates to accrue waiting time.

We will contact individual centers to communicate compliance issues. If you have questions about this or other OPTN policies, please contact your regional administrator at (804) 782-4800.
